Hello there!
It’s getting chilly out there in Adelaide and the suburbs, but we are always here to help you out with any queries you may have. Lately we’ve noticed an increase in the amount of customers calling in to ask about a Certificate of Compliance for their heater repairs.
Here’s some good news: in South Australia, you only need an ECOC for a few specific cases, unlike in other states.
When do I need a Certificate of Compliance?
Gas fitters must give you an eCoC for:
- performing work on gas pipes
- installing or replacing appliances, such as hot water units and stove tops
- converting to an alternative gas, for example from LPG to natural gas.
Certificates aren’t required for repairs or maintenance on an existing appliance.

So if I don’t need a Certificate of Compliance to Repair or Maintain my Heater, why not do it myself?
A lot of people give this a go, buying parts on the internet and having absolutely no idea what they are really doing.
While saving money on work is certainly an attractive proposition, it’s important to remember that legalities and regulations exist for a reason – to protect you. Cutting corners can hurt you in the long run. However, we’ve made a list of what you can and can’t do in South Australia.

What is Legal?
If you have the skills, you can connect or disconnect a gas cylinder and portable equipment that uses the cylinder. For example, a BBQ or patio heater.
Never use outdoor gas equipment indoors.
What should only be performed by a Fully Licenced Gas Fitter?
By law, you must use a licensed gas fitter for any work between the property’s gas meter outlet or LPG gas supply and (including on):
- the gas appliance
- pipework to the appliance
- any flues and ducts.
This is why we say:
Get us to take care of your gas heater, and we’ll take care of you and your family
After all, with trained and fully licenced gas technicians we know our job, and as a family business, we know families.
Your family can’t do without you, just as ours can’t do without us.
Finally, Just Remember:
- No Certificate of Compliance is Required for Repairs for Gas Household Appliances.
- You cannot legally fix or service your own heater if you are not a qualified Gas Fitter, so please don’t put yourself in danger!
